All We Needjl

By James Loftin

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end. Isaiah 9:6-7a

This fall my favorite football team used this chant to build enthusiasm and unity before games. One player led with, “We’re all we’ve got!” The other players screamed back, “We’re all we need.” The words focused the team on the fact that no player could sit back and wait on someone else to step up. On every play, each athlete needed to perform as if the entire game was on his shoulders.

The chant was somewhat effective for the football team (9-2). A life based on this philosophy, however, is certain to be disappointing and far below what our Father desires for His children. A chant more appropriate for Team Jesus is, “He’s all we’ve got - He’s all we need!”

Two thousand years ago small business owners, rural farmers, blue collar newlyweds, religious leaders, wealthy scholars and government leaders looked down at infant Jesus and asked questions like...

Is this it? He's what we have been waiting for? A peasant child in Bethlehem? This is the Hope of the world? This is our Messiah?

The answer to these questions, our questions, was almost imperceptible at first. The Source of the answer is unseen and other-worldly but strangely familiar. Across the centuries the answer has echoed into stables, palaces, fields, offices and homes with increasing clarity and power. It thundered into my heart in August 1970.

In John 14:6 Jesus answers a question with these words, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” Jesus, and only Jesus, is the Hope of the world. He is all we need.

By faith, you are the child of God.

You are a person of infinite worth; God gave his Son for you.

You are filled with the Spirit of the living God.

You have a future and a hope.

You have Jesus as companion, guide, redeemer and Lord.

Your needs may seem overwhelming, but Jesus is greater than your need. He’s more than enough. He is our “Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” Jesus is our Way, Truth and Life.

Our circumstances may not change, but God will be faithful.

He’s all we’ve got; He’s all we need!

Cling to Jesus and worship Him today as you share the Good News: A Child is born!
