Going to Grow - Serving in Chinateam

The core calling of FollowOne is to mobilize disciples in ministry. One way we do this is by taking groups to China.

By the end of this year, FollowOne will have led 23 trips involving 345 people serving Christ in 14 Chinese cities. This includes doctoral students in Asbury Theological Seminary's Beeson International Studies program. FollowOne trips have involved and impacted pastors, educators, business leaders and parents from over 13 countries.

Our trips expose participants to Chinese culture and history, provide fellowship opportunities with Chinese believers, and involve all in service according to the requests of our Chinese partners. We have led business seminars, served children in orphanages, taught English in universities, prayer-walked, organized music concerts, made presentations to over 1,500 children and educators in 20 schools and delivered over 2 tons of Bibles and Christian literature.

Every trip ends with this challenge:

Your experience in China was not primarily about China. God took you to China to show you His glory and to invite you and your church to grow in your involvement in His ministry throughout the world.

The impact of our trips goes far beyond China:

  • Other countries - Thomasville First United Methodist Church began a partnership with an agency FollowOne recommended in order to mobilize Chinese to plant churches in a neighboring Muslim country.

  • Adoptions - Many team members have chosen to adopt children. "Following our first trip to China with FollowOne, my wife began a full court press on me regarding adoption. She  very moved by the things we witnessed, and a few months later we began the adoption process," Joe LaMotta (Oviedo, FL).

  • Scholars in USA - Our teams often spend time with Chinese scholars that have studied in the USA. Many team members have returned home to help launch and expand their church's outreach to the international students God is bringing to their communities. "Upon returning home I was compelled remembering the look in the eyes of the Chinese people when they first heard the news of Hope. I found those same eyes seeking and longing for hope on the campus of the University of Alabama," Kathy Hayes (Tuscaloosa, AL).

  • Hispanic church - FollowOne is privileged to have helped launch some of the first Hispanic teams for service in China. The driving force behind this is Joanne Solis Walker (Director of Latino/Latina Education at Indiana Wesleyan University) and Jose Hernandez (Casselberry, FL). "They have done more than anyone I know to mobilize the Hispanic church in strategic mission. There is no telling how many ripples have spread from our investment in them," James Loftin.

  • Changed lives:

    • "I experienced a hundred wonderful signs or examples of His presence in this FollowOne experience. There is absolutely no question in my mind that there exists in China today a huge hunger for the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and that FollowOne International is one of many organizations that are lovingly and effectively responding to this need,"  Don Rhoads (Germantown, TN).

    • "One day a well-known Chinese Christian leader came to share with our group. He had been imprisoned for his work with house churches. He exuded a simple, radiant, unfeigned joy as he spoke of the privilege of suffering for the Lord. His story sounded familiar, and I realized that my prayer group had been praying for this man for almost a year! Standing in front of me was this brother of mine! When I introduced myself, he was touched by Christ as deeply as I was. I will never forget the way he thanked me for standing with him in prayer. It was a holy and tearful moment for our entire team," Bobbie Russell (Houston, TX).

    • "When I returned home it was amazingly difficult to transition back into the 'American lifestyle.' The possessions and freedoms I have in this country gave me an overwhelming burden that needed to be reconciled on a global level. I knew God had much bigger, broader ideas of how I was to serve Him and bring the message of His love and saving grace to others in the world. As my husband and I prayed through this, we felt called to help plant a new church," Linda LaVardera (Oviedo, FL).

    • "What happens in China doesn't stay in China," Soup Campbell (Memphis, TN).

    • While picking up his adopted Chinese daughter, Rick had the opportunity to meet and share Christ with a Chinese scholar that had studied in Orlando. "I am so thankful that God used FollowOne and my little Lucy to forever change the life of a university professor on the other side of the world," Rick Anderson (Nacogdoches, TX).

    • "It amazes me that so many profound changes in my life happened as a direct result of that trip," Pastor Jesse McClain (Jacksonville, FL).

God will use a FollowOne trip to encourage the church in China, spread the Good News of Jesus Christ, renew your faith, clarify your calling, and bring guidance and energy to your church's outreach strategy. Contact us for information about our next trip!
